I'm a gooder mama....our funny family language

She put her tiny little arms around my neck while I was chopping wood and getting the fire going this morning......

Maddie: "You're a good mama"
Me: "Am I?"
Maddie: "A gooder and gooder mama....cause you don't beat us or nothin"

I got to thinking after that about all of the silly things we say as a family, that only we understand, and thought about how sweet it is that we have our own little language. I'm sure every family does. You see, I say "I'm gunna beat you!" about 100 times a day when they are being too cute, obnoxious, silly, or when they spray me with the old rubber band around the sprayer trick AGAIN (one of these days I'm gunna learn to look at that sprayer before I turn the stinkin water on!). When they are just looking extra cute (like she is here in this "Maddie made get-up") and they are in danger of being smothered in mama kisses I usually say "I can't even stand you right now!". Then there are the times that I'm sitting and I realize that nobody is sitting on me (I hate that feeling), I say "Who's my brat?" or "Poor ole mama" and they will race each other to get to me because they know exactly what it means.....mama's lap is empty and if I hurry I can get the best spot! If I say "I need my favorite" Tim brings me my favorite quilt and he covers me up with it and he usually says "poor baby, mama was cold...it's OK baby, I got you your favorite". We all say "tender" instead of pretend because Molly did that when she was little, here's an example: "Mom is that real or just tender?" We also say snickle instead of snuggle...

(Maddie came up with this outfit a few weeks back and then asked for "princess hair" and an photo shoot. I'm tellin you, "I can't stand" this kid!)

What are some of your family sayings?

LOL, I almost couldn't read past "Cuz you don't beat us or nothin'" How hysterical. I think all families have their own language. Treasure it. Too cute.

What a sweetie--she looks like a little doll. We had our own language as well growing up-- and even though we don't have kids yet we almost have one "developing" now!

I sorted out my java problem on my computer and could finally watch all your videos. Loved them!

Maddie is just the cutest!
She makes me want to NM right now to see my toddler (Faith is in her first mission trip, all the way in Rehoboth, NM. :/ with her Daddy).
We also have our own language...but most times we make everything sound tiny...like chicken-chikey; hugs-huggies; cold-coldie...or some things we say in spanish (my native language).
ohhh... how i miss my Foofoo right now. :(

That's funny - we still say 'constructions' for instructions and antything for anything because Scout used to say those things when he was little - I'm sure anyone hearing us would think we were illiterate...

I love your blog and your sweet family. You are an ispiration for me to keep up on my blog better this year.

P.S. our favorite family work is "secret patrick way" in place of "secret passage way" from my sweet five year old.

Loved your post today! You made me smile. You sound (videos) and write like a sweet southern mama. Your children are lucky, Samantha.

I love family language! It is one of the things that tie us together and no one else understands! We say "Lashlees" for eyelashes, and "ooshes" for shoes. Our daughter is 22 now, but she knows exactly what I am saying when I tell her that her lashlees look pretty.

So much fun.
We call our mini van a bus. Allison wanted to ride the big yellow bus at about age 3, so I told her we already had a bus...the van, and it stuck.
We also call restaurants food houses, another Allison thing.
J.J. has us into looking for funny words...some of the most recent ones he's found is issue, and snickerdoodle. When he says or hears one of the words, he busts up laughing.
Lastly, when someone does something extra sweet, we say "what happens when you're sweet" and then smother them with kisses.
Thanks for this post, Samantha.

Hey Sam...you know that my house is just as nutty as yours and yes we have our own language too. Especially Henry! It's so funny sometimes he says something and we all look at each other with a puzzled look on our faces and then in an instant Abby will translate...so funny how sometimes siblings know better than mama and daddy what their little brothers and sisters are saying. 2 of our current Henry favorites are..."Pinlem" translated means Pink Lemonade and "Toepay" which translated means toaster pastry...anyone who isn't used to being around little kids would surely need a a foreign language specialist to understand some of the funny things at our house!

You're not going to believe this. Just as I was reading,"...'cause you don't beat us or nothin'..." my 6yo Ben hands me a book and asks me to read to him. The title? The Whipping Boy. LOL!

Love your blog. ;)

The Handmade Dress Infomercial: Do you suffer from scrached DVD's?

Do your children cry when they can't watch their favorite movie because of irritating scratches? Are you sick of paying good money for movies that are scratched minutes after you take them from the case? Do you often wish that we could just go back to VHS because you could leave them out in the rain, bring them in and use them for a coaster, and then let the baby throw it for fun and it would STILL WORK!? ME TOO ! . We have struggled for years with scratched movies that were no longer watchable, but not anymore! We have finally found the secret formula to rid you of this nasty little problem forever! . Crest Kids Toothpaste! YES, that's what I said! Kids toothpaste! . A few months back I heard some place that toothpaste would take of scratches and I tried it and it didn't work, then the other day out of pure desperation I tried it my way. IT WORKED! So I decided this kind of news could not be kept secret, I have to tell the world! So I

New triple bunks.

Ben designed new bunk beds for the "girl's dorm" and "boy's dorm" in our house. We LOVE them!! We are almost done with all of the work, just a few loose ends left to tie up, but I couldn't wait to show off his handy-work. This is the girl set. We stained them with colored stain and we really like how that turned out. It's almost the color of cranberries. I still need to paint the boards that are attached to the wall. I'm going to paint them the color of the wall so that it looks like the beds are floating. :)  This is the boy set while still under construction. We ordered new bunk mattresses, but they haven't come in yet. I will show you guys pictures when they are completely finished. We stained these green, it looks like the color of bamboo. The kids LOVE these beds! And oh the space we have now! I'll be back soon with finished pictures! xo, Sam If any of you make beds using these plans could you send us a picture? We
