The Handmade Dress Infomercial: Do you suffer from scrached DVD's?

Do your children cry when they can't watch their favorite movie because of irritating scratches? Are you sick of paying good money for movies that are scratched minutes after you take them from the case? Do you often wish that we could just go back to VHS because you could leave them out in the rain, bring them in and use them for a coaster, and then let the baby throw it for fun and it would STILL WORK!? ME TOO!

.

We have struggled for years with scratched movies that were no longer watchable, but not anymore! We have finally found the secret formula to rid you of this nasty little problem forever!

.

Crest Kids Toothpaste! YES, that's what I said! Kids toothpaste!

.

A few months back I heard some place that toothpaste would take of scratches and I tried it and it didn't work, then the other day out of pure desperation I tried it my way. IT WORKED! So I decided this kind of news could not be kept secret, I have to tell the world! So I have put together a little tutorial for you.
First let me say this: I have tried this on DVDs, Cds, and a Wii game and it has worked like a charm every time, but on one REALLY scratched DVD I had to do it twice (after the second time it never skipped a lick- yeah I just said skipped a lick, shuuu-up). And it is my belief that you need to use kids toothpaste, because when I tried this before with adult toothpaste it didn't work (I think it was because it may have been too abrasive). It worked with this crest toothpaste so I will be sticking with this brand from now on. . All you need is toothpaste, a DVD, a clean soft towel, and a sink. Now you will just dot on some toothpaste. Spread it out evenly. Then you will rub in circles applying pressure until the toothpaste starts to feel too dry and sticky to rub anymore. Pressure wise I would say just keep in mind that you are kind of buffing the scratches out of the plastic so you need to have a moderate amount of pressure. I rub with my first three fingers as shown above. Then I rinse it off in warm water, rubbing gentle to make sure I have gotten off all the sticky. You don't want toothpaste in your DVD player.

Next pat the DVD dry with a soft clean towel.

And there you have it! A scratch free disc that the whole family will enjoy! You may still be able to see most of the scratches but they will be not be as deep now so they won't skip.

I hope this helps someone. We had so many movies that we have not watched in months because of scratches and now the kids feel like we have new movies.

xoxo,

Samantha

DISCLAIMER: I am no expert scratch getter, I'm a stay at home mama who is just sharing what has worked for me. You can try this at your own risk. LOL!

Thank you! Here is my tip for toothpaste. My dad is a firm believer in using toothpaste on cuts and scrapes on your body. It has to be a regular toothpaste and not one with extra flouride or stuff in it. Rub it on scratches and scrapes and they will heal much faster. He cut himself really deep at work one day on his wrist and probably needed stitches, but used regular toothpaste on it instead and it was gone within a week and left no scarring! The toothepaste kills the bacteria and allows it to heal faster!

I have tried this so many times with other toothpaste and have not had any luck.

Im going to try the kids crest. I have a stack of DVDs that sit there collecting dust. My kids would be thrilled if they could watch all their favs again!
Thanks

I'll definitely try this. I've purchased 3 Cars DVD's and my son has gotten a hold of each one and put scratches on them. Now I just have to get some kid's crest....

I use toothpaste too, as my son likes to use dvds as teething rings. The comment about cuts and scrapes reminds me of My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

Just put Windex on it. :)

I did it on a DVD my daughter loves! It was so scratched I had to do it 3 times. I used Dora, kids colgate. I almost cried when I put it in the player and it WORKED! Awesome idea!

Tried it this am on 10 different discs. I tested each disc before I tried the toothpaste so i would know where they each started skipping. Did not work on any of the discs. I followed the directions exactly and it didn't work on any of them. Great idea if it would have really worked!

Just used this tip to fix a favorite dvd that had been scratched and a wii game that wouldn't load because it was scratched. They are both working like new now. Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing this information. I want to tell all of my friends.

i tried this on a really badly scratched dvd, and it worked great!
This really does work--but you have to make sure you go around with the contour of the CD--big circles. We just use white Colgate, and it works fine. Sometimes you have to do it two or three times, but it works.

Found this via pinterest and loved it! Thanks for providing my kids with hours of entertainment. I probably had 15 dvds that were scratched and now work.

I've heard that you can do this with chapstick, too. My great-grandmother was like the dad in MBFGW about Windex, but her thing was Vaseline. I wonder if Vaseline would work in this instance. I have one DVD that is not at all playable anymore, so I'll try it on that one. Thanks for the tip -- I'm here from Pinterest.

Sad :( This did not work for me, followed instructions exactly.
I've heard that you shouldn't rub the DVD in a circular motion, because that's how the player reads it. Looks like you did tiny circles all over, though.
Anonymous said…
was so hoping that this would work. Sadly, it did not. I tried it on 2 dvd's and 2 xbox games....*sigh* guess they were beyond repair. Everything is destructable when it comes to 2 year old boys...lol. Thanks for the tip though. At least I was only out 97 cents for the cheap fix. As for the price of the countless dvds and games that have been ruined....being a toddler: priceless!

I've found any thick hand/face cream buffed on and wiped off usually works pretty well too. I've even kept a jar of really expensive wrinkle cream that separated and is so old I would never use on my face. It actually worked really well and I dont have to feel bad about throwing it away because I still use it.

Thanks for the great tip! I have had a Wii game that my toddler LOVES that couldn't be played anymore. I had to try your tip twice to get it to work. The second time I rubbed the toothpaste in large circles, following the shape of the disc. Now my toddler is happy, and I am wishing I never fixed the annoying game! ;)

If you have a scratched Disney DVD that you can't fix, Disney will replace it for you. They will do this for any of the DVD's and Blu Rays. going to try with kids toothpaste. You can also buff I heard with furniture polish to fill in any extra scratches. Recently found out too you can replace any Disney DVD for a flat rate. If you're really in a pinch I think they are $5 or $8 to replace DVD's more for Blue Ray.

Tried 3 or 4 times on a Wii game and it did not work :( I think the scratches are just too deep!
Anonymous said…
I think what you are really doing rather than buffing out the scratches is filling them in so the beam of light that reads them doesn't go in the scratch mark causing the skip. My guess would be that the nanosecond of movie that is affected by the scratch at that moment that the light goes over it is not long enough to make a difference while watching. My daughter accidentally cleaned our flat screen TV with Pledge. It was scratched up pretty bad by our toddler over the years. When I went to clean the Pledge off of the screen, it looked remarkable better and has stayed that way. So again, thinking it is just filling in the scratches.
Anonymous said…
Nice tip! I'd only suggest that you do not rub in circles, but rather in lines from the center to the edge. Why? Because if by any badluck there is any little grainy thing when you rub, this will create even more scratches... And scratches are the most damageable when they follow the curve of the DVD because the data is stored and read following the curve.

I don't know if my explanation is clear, but that's one of the first things they taught us in computer science classes!

Really ticks me off when my Netflix DVDs don't work. I'm going to try this on them. Hope Netflix doesn't mind.
MelisaH said…
I have used dusting spray (pledge) to do this. My dad keyed me into this trick...he uses the pledge to clean his glasses and says that the pledge fills the scratches so he can see better so I thought why not on a DVD. I will have to try the toothpaste trick on some of our more scratched movies... Maybe combine the too. Thanks for sharing!

I read your post and tried right away, since I have kids their toothpaste is Crest, so it was on hand. Did not work. I tried twice just like you say on super scratch DVD, but nothing. I will try again, tomorrow and will update my post.

Okay so I had rented a DVD from my local library earlier this week and finally had the chance to watch it. When it started up on my computer, I wasn't able to see anything. The picture was one big blur and I could only see the light changing. So I took it out, did the old breathe on the disc tric and wiped it on my shirt. This next time the picture was clear for about 5 seconds, and then went back to how it was. I did the breathing thing about 2 more times to no avail. Finaly I remembered seeing this post, and luckily pinning it, on Pinterest. Instead of crest kids, I used colgate kids toothpaste. WORKED LIKE A CHARM. I did not have one issue throughout the entire movie. I will forever remember this trick.

I've heard metal polish works, too. yet to try that though. It needs to be an abrasive material, not a liquidy kind. Also, be sure to rub out scratches center to outer edges, not in a circular motion. This affects playback and circular scratches are the worst kind!

I had a Disney DVD that I tried this with...it got better with the first 2 tries, but after the 3rd try, it wouldn't play at all:( But, did you all know, Disney will replace your broken or scratched DVD for a small fee?! Seriously! All you have to do is go to the Disney Movie Rewards site at the very bottom of the screen there is an option you can choose "Guest Service Center". That will get you to the Disc Replacement Program and the instructions and forms you need Here is their help center: http://www.disneystudioshelp.com/detail_TOPSUPP_DiscReplace__SUPPORT.html It is only $6.95 for a regular DVD and a little more for blueray...just thought I would share! I tried this and it works for small scratches but not the big ones. I found that using hand soap works too. It's the gentle oil or waxes that are in the product that fills in the scratches. Using a disk cleaning product works too. i haven't found a cleaner that works for major scratches. Also Disney sales registered Replacement dvds for a discounted price.

I have been doing this for years. Sometimes you can use alcohol for those tiny scratches, not sure what it does but it works - toothpaste and alcohol - not together of course.

Another tip for toothpaste, it removes kids koolaide mustache, when they drink koolaide and it stains their upper lip area, just rub on and rinse off.

Thanks, my daughter has been wanting to watch a movie that was scratched and so I just went and used her kids crest toothpaste and it worked and now she's watching it! Awesome!

This will work so long as the scratch is only on the plastic protective coating and not so deep it is into where the data is stored. Also, over time the toothpaste may wear away and you will have to do it again.

Our x box laser put a huge, deep scratch all the way across one of my favorite movies. it would not play at all. I tried the toothpaste and it worked!!!! Pretty sure it is only 1 disc per household per year. Not per title. You still have to pay shipping, something like $8 I think. Or maybe it is less within the US, but it was $8 to Canada.

I keep hearing about paying only $7 or so for Disney movies repair. Not good. That's expensive. Go on ebay and you'll find people willing to repair for cheap. Mail them the cds and they will mail back your repaired cds (usually repaired with and industrial cd resurfacer!. If you send a bunch most will go down to like 25 or 50 cents per cd.

Toothpaste is actually a good acne cleanser as well. You just dab some toothpaste on problem spots and let it stay for a couple hours. It's not one of those "miracle" acne solutions, but it does dry the pimples out after a few uses so they're not as big and bulge-y. Just thought I'd share what works for me! Blessings!

toothpaste also works on burns!! if your flat iron slips... yes it happens to the best of us!... apply toothpaste to it, it doesnt matter what brand, and i also normally place a band-aid over it so i don't get it all over me! It will take the annoying pain right out of it!

Hopefully we will be able to fix many more of our DVDs taht we thought we trash!

i've been doing cd/dvd repair for years using clear car wax (turtle wax). first, clean the cd/dvd and dry. then apply the wax and buff. filling the scratches w/ something that doesn't reflect the beam of light from reading the info stored under the clear coating of the cd/dvd that makes is usable again.

this tip has literally saved me thousands of dollars over the last 20 years!

Never heard of using toothpaste. I use Pledge spray (the Lemon variety seems to work the best but the Dust&Allergen kind works well too) to remove the scratches and restore playability. I place the disc on top of a soft cotton cloth or a microfiber cloth, shake the can of Pledge well, and then spray on a thick, even coat of polish. I wait for the bubbles to disipate then working from the center towards the edge I firmly rub the polish in all directions (so that the scratches get filled in from every direction). Then, using a clean corner (or another cloth), I gently buff the disc until it is shiny. It has worked every time and I have only had to repeat this on one disc. I use this on almost every single disc we get from NetFlix and RedBox. Not to mention the plethora of abused movies, games and music we own.

I used Colgate kids toothpaste and it seemed to work the same. I had a copy of Freaky Friday that wouldn't even make it passed the third preview. I did this trick 3 times and it plays like new :) still the appearance of scratches but plays like new
