Crochet Flower Tutorial

Click pictures to enlarge, and don't look at my ugly, unmanicured, stay-at-home mother of three fingernails!
As promised this is my quick and easy flower tutorial. These make great hair pins or barrettes.
They could also be used to decorate gifts, to spiff up some ready to wear clothing, and baby booties. Let me know all the ways you could use them!
I used sport weight yarn and a size H hook. This pattern will work with lots of other hook and thread combinations, as shown above.
Chain 6.

Join with a slip stitch to beginning chain to form a "loop".

Chain 3.

Work triple crochet in main "loop", over yarn tail as shown, repeat three more times.

There will be four triple crochet in each petal. Single crochet, then start next petal.

Work five petals.

Slip stitch to beginning petal.

Now using the yarn tail that you have crochet to the loop, gently pull the center tight.

To finish off pull yarn to back of flower, cut, and tie to yarn tail using a square knot.

Oh, Samantha, your work is beautiful. I do so much sewing, it's often lovely to snuggle up on the lounge & do some small hand stitching. Love Posie
Forgot to leave my gem of advice, use the little crochet flowers on hair elastics & bobby pins, super sweet & the hair bands are less likely to be disgarded. Love Posie

That is cool, I made some crocheted flowers from a library book I have that turned out cute but they were huge and bulky, this one looks about right for a little girls hat that is what I wanted it to go on or on barrettes maybe. Thanks!
I spent today re-learning how to crochet. Your patterns and your tutorials are a priceless gift you give to us. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks so very much, I had googled crocheted flower but didn't really see anything that was simple and would lie flat on a card. Sure appreciate the pattern, TFS Hugs n' Stuff, Lynne

Megan,
I have looked and looked for these pictures in my files and I just can't find them anymore. The only way I would be able to make them larger would be re-load them. I'm sorry!

hello ! I am French and I appreciate very much
American and English persons who give so many informations, it is very useful, interesting and generous from them. In France there are some informations, but in Italy and Spain they only show their work, they don't give the explanations. So, again, thank you and tell that around you.micheline

Thank you for your adorable pattern!! I am in love with making little crochet flowers at the moment...(until the mood changes). But I was wondering how you made the double flower one (pink and white)? I would be thrilled to make some of those for a project!! thank you

I make rubber stamped greeting cards and we are putting these crochet flowers on our cards. Of course they sell fleurettes (same as yours) in the StampinUp catalog but I think I'll make my own, thanks to you. I also sew and knit and I'm hoping to learn from you. You ROCK!

Hello! I found your tutorials how-to-sew in your blog.
I would like to translate them into Russian and post them in my site. I will mention you and your site.
Is it possible? What will be your condition?

Looking forward to trying out some of your dress patterns (I'm a forever-beginner when it comes to sewing) and learning more crochet techniques. You have a fantastic site and a great gift. Thanks!!
Thanks so much for this Flower Tutorial. It's awesome! I've been trying to find something like this but, everything I've found is either too hard (at least for me) or results in too big a flower. These are perfect, easy and fun. Thanks again!

I just wanted to say thank you for posting this! I've got a craft show coming up in just 3 days and haven't had the time to do my craft show projects because of orders to be filled. I desperately needed show fillers and these little flower work up in about 5 minutes! Add a little gem to the center with hot glue, line a clip and attach the flower! Perfect!!!!

I'm making your flowers for hats for three 2 year-old girls. I'm hoping to find a cute button, like a lady bug or butterfly that they will fit over to make them interchangeable on the hat. In the meantime, my 11 year-old saw me making them and now wants to use them for Mother's Day for her grandmothers, which is perfect since they are so quick and simple. Thank you so very much!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! I have recently started crocheting and I find it sooooooo difficult as I don't understand the patterns. I have done loads of internet searched but it seems that there a bunch of differences in stitches between UK and US (I live in South Africa). This flower is so lovely and your tutorial soooo helpful. Thank you again

Cool. Interesting. I didn't know about this craft until now..I mean I have heard from my grandma and aunt of doing crochet..Although, I'd never tried doing so. I might consider doing it on my spare times. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful experience of yours.
I admire the way you express yourself through writing. Your post is such a refreshing one to read. This is such an interesting and informative article to share with others. Keep up the good work and more power. Thanks!

I've made these several times for necklaces, and they're so brilliantly simple. They're now going to disguise patches of too-loose tension on a scarf my friend's knitting
Amazing job, you're so talented!

Question: do I need to chain three at the beginning of each petal, or just at the very beginning of the flower?

Thanks in advance!

Thank you thank you thank you! :) I have crocheted in the past, but I'm learning how to perfect it...I'm creating Preemie hats for NICU babies. :) I was having so much trouble finding a flower pattern that I understood, or could pull off relatively easy. This is going to help so much! Thanks!! :D

Yay! Time to celebrate! I've been crocheting (if you want to call it that) for years but sadly only afghans using SC, DC or a shell stitch. I can't read patterns to save my life but I thought I would be daring and give these flowers a try and voila, I made an adorable little flower thanks to you. It's the first thing I've made that wasn't straight because it wasn't supposed to be!

The Handmade Dress Infomercial: Do you suffer from scrached DVD's?

Do your children cry when they can't watch their favorite movie because of irritating scratches? Are you sick of paying good money for movies that are scratched minutes after you take them from the case? Do you often wish that we could just go back to VHS because you could leave them out in the rain, bring them in and use them for a coaster, and then let the baby throw it for fun and it would STILL WORK!? ME TOO ! . We have struggled for years with scratched movies that were no longer watchable, but not anymore! We have finally found the secret formula to rid you of this nasty little problem forever! . Crest Kids Toothpaste! YES, that's what I said! Kids toothpaste! . A few months back I heard some place that toothpaste would take of scratches and I tried it and it didn't work, then the other day out of pure desperation I tried it my way. IT WORKED! So I decided this kind of news could not be kept secret, I have to tell the world! So I

New triple bunks.

Ben designed new bunk beds for the "girl's dorm" and "boy's dorm" in our house. We LOVE them!! We are almost done with all of the work, just a few loose ends left to tie up, but I couldn't wait to show off his handy-work. This is the girl set. We stained them with colored stain and we really like how that turned out. It's almost the color of cranberries. I still need to paint the boards that are attached to the wall. I'm going to paint them the color of the wall so that it looks like the beds are floating. :)  This is the boy set while still under construction. We ordered new bunk mattresses, but they haven't come in yet. I will show you guys pictures when they are completely finished. We stained these green, it looks like the color of bamboo. The kids LOVE these beds! And oh the space we have now! I'll be back soon with finished pictures! xo, Sam If any of you make beds using these plans could you send us a picture? We
